Adopt a Country is a school-based program that enhances global citizenship and awareness by encouraging students to learn about other counties, and by connecting BC students with peers around the world. Download the Adopt a Country School Guide for details on how to register your students’ “adoption” of one of the participating countries in the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Games, and for suggestions on how teachers can integrate this program into existing class work. Schools are encouraged to register in order to receive updates, such as opportunities to connect with schools in their adopted country or chances to meet Olympic and Paralympic athletes.
Visit the Adopt a Country page to learn more, and visit the Newsroom to see what BC students have been doing to learn about and connect with other countries. Also see the Lesson Starters for a compilation of sample activities created by classroom teachers, suitable for use with the Adopt a Country program as well as other 2010 education programs.
On April 30, 2009, young author and environmental activist Severn Cullis-Suzuki joined us for the third and final Sharing the Dream webcast of the 2008-2009 school year. To view this or other archived webcasts, and for information about next year's webcast schedule, visit the Sharing the Dream webcast page.
Teachers are invited to visit the Lesson Starters section to find ideas about how to integrate the excitement of the Olympic and Paralympic Games into their classroom. As the publicity surrounding the Games builds, using the Olympics is a great way to get students excited about a number of topics. The Lesson Starters database contains activities for a wide range of grade levels and subject areas. We invite teachers to submit their own lessons to share with fellow educators, as well as a chance to win Olympic-themed prizes.
