Student Reporter Program

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games offer a relevant and exciting context for engaging students as reporters and motivating learning. When the Torch Relay comes through your town or city, when your school is visited by an Olympic or Paralympic athlete, when your community has a mini-Olympic or Paralympic Games or winter festival, your students will be "on the beat" getting the information and recording the sights, sounds and emotions.

Your community is full of events and activities that could mobilize students to become reporters – and put their language arts and social studies skills to good practice. Students can use their skills with new technologies to record information and observations, tape interviews, produce video clips, and snap photographs. These tools then become the raw materials for school or community newscasts, newspapers, magazines and documentaries.

The media pieces that are produced by students can be published by their teachers on the B.C. government's 2010 Spirit School website and on the educational portal of the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games at www.vancouver2010.com/edu.
